...has refused a photographer's requests to remove an image of a monkey originally taken on his camera because the monkey pressed the shutter.
Wikipedia says "as the work [is] of a non-human animal, it has no human author in whom copyright is vested."
Photographer David Slater claims the image, now dubbed the 'monkey selfie', has lost him £10,000 in income over two years. The image is deemed to be in the "public domain" by Wikipedia, and has therefore had no interest from buyers over copyright.
Slater facilitated the macaques' photo shoot when, after three days of shadowing the barrel, he set up the camera on a tripod, framed the shot and waited for the monkeys to engage with the equipment.
The 'monkey selfie' was a worldwide web hit and was published in and paid for by many news websites. The web encyclopaedia used the image however to illustrate the endangered species without paying.
It is not known yet whether Slater will take legal action.
