SOCIAL WELFARE
By Nicola Laver
The Labour party has pledged to plough £18m into providing free legal training for 200 social welfare lawyers if it wins a general election. The aim is to create a new network of law centres or other legal aid providers to help 'hard-hit' communities defend their rights and secure justice. The lawyers will be trained to specialise in matters such as benefits, debt, housing, employment, immigration and asylum. A further £20m will go towards a new network of 'people's law centres', offering legal support on local issues such as unlawful employment practices. 23 September 2019
