Formal sale agreements executed and due diligence 'substantially completed'

Slater & Gordon has announced that the purchase of claimant personal injury firm Fentons is under way. It was reported last week that the firms were in talks over the move.

Fentons became an ABS in February this year, with former APIL president Karl Tonks as the COLP.

The firm has 280 staff and offices in Manchester and London. Along with personal injury, the firm also advises on human rights cases, professional negligence and private client.

Kieran Maguire, senior partner of Fentons said: "At a time when government reforms are putting greater pressure on claimants and their lawyers, we feel by combining our talents, we will be able to serve our clients and articulate their causes better."

He went on: "Our organisations have much in common, both have forged reputations in fighting for justice for the victims of industrial disease, workplace accidents, and clinical negligence.

"Today is a historic day for Fentons Solicitors LLP and we are delighted to confirm that we have agreed to join Slater & Gordon and form one of the largest claimant law firms nationally."

Neil Kinsella (pictured), chief executive of S & G in the UK, said the firm had "substantially completed due diligence and executed formal business sale agreements" for the purchase and completion was expected in October 2013.

"We believe Fentons is an ideal partner to move forward with our plans for strategic growth and to boost our presence in the UK. Both firms are focused on delivering high quality, affordable legal services to everyday people."

Slater & Gordon announced last week that it had completed a deal to buy the personal injury and Court of Protection practices of Cambridge-based Taylor Vinters.

The personal injury giant announced plans to buy Taylor Vinters, along with national firm Simpson Millar and personal injury specialist Goodmans Law, in May.

The purchase of Goodmans is due to complete by the end of August.
