Law Society announces new vice president
Solicitor Mark Evans takes up the role of vice president in 2024, and will take over from Lubna Shuja as president the following year
The Law Society of England and Wales announced the new appointment on 4 August. A press release said:
"Mark practised property and private client law for more than 28 years. He was a director at Allington Hughes Solicitors, a cross-border general high street law firm with offices in North Wales and Chester. Currently, he teaches various courses on real estate, private client and professional skills at the University of Law.
"Mark was a member of the society's Wales Committee for nine years and acted as chair for four of those years. He has been on our Council for more than eight years and was a former president and chair of the Cheshire and North Wales Law Society. As a Welsh office holder, Mark brings a new perspective to the Law Society with a comprehensive understanding of the Welsh jurisdiction and considerable experience engaging with the Welsh government."
Evans said: “I am extremely proud to have been elected as the next deputy vice president of the Law Society and the first in our history to be elected from North Wales.
“As we approach our bicentenary, now is the time to promote a modern, diverse and inclusive profession. I want to encourage ambitious and aspiring solicitors from all backgrounds to enter and stay within the legal profession.
“During the coming years we must adapt to a changing legal landscape and utilise legal technology and innovation. I am, in particular, looking forward to welcoming new members at admission ceremonies and engaging with all members throughout England and Wales.”
Law Society president, Lubna Shuja, said: “I extend my deepest congratulations to Mark, who emerged as the winner from a strong field of candidates. Mark will bring his own unique perspective and experience to the role.
"As we are the Law Society of England and Wales, it is great to see a Welsh member will take office. I look forward to seeing what Mark accomplishes in post and warmly wish him all the very best.”
The Law Society has three office holders, who each hold office for one year – the president, vice president and deputy vice president.
Each year, the society’s council elects a new deputy vice president, after which the previous year's deputy vice president becomes the vice president, and the vice president becomes president.
