LADY HALE
By Nicola Laver
Supreme Court president Lady Hale (below) courted controversy last month with comments on both Brexit and the government's social policies. She said the Supreme Court's ruling in Miller was 'reminiscent of the 17th-century battle between parliament and the king. We were reinforcing principles that had been established then'. Around the same time, during a speech on the Isle of Wight, she alluded to families 'fighting for enough to live on and to make ends meet', adding that 'the government's austerity policies have undoubtedly made this worse'.
