INHERITANCE SCAMS

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) issued inheritance scam alerts after criminals emailed recipients falsely claiming to be from a lawyer at a genuine law firm about inheritance claims. In one case, emails purportedly from 'John Cahill' of 'Stewarts Law LLP' were sent to recipients regarding an unclaimed inheritance of £3m from a relative's will. The recipients were asked for their address, identification and direct telephone number so that the holding bank can 'proceed with final clarification / reveal further details and documents' about the inheritance. The SRA warned the profession to exercise due diligence. 3 January 2020
