Freeths unveils ambitious 2040 net zero plan

Leading law firm Freeths has published its first Net Zero Transition Plan, underscoring its sustainable future roadmap
The plan outlines a scientifically-backed strategy for achieving net zero across its operations by 2040, supported by verified targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This marks an important milestone in Freeths’ long-standing commitment to sustainability, which has seen significant advancements over the past decade. Since earning ISO 14001 certification in 2015, the firm has progressively measured its emissions, beginning with Scope one and two in 2020, while also improving its governance through the establishment of a Responsible Business Committee.
With the completion of its first Carbon Reduction Plan in 2024 and a collaboration with Planet Mark to create an SBTi-aligned roadmap, Freeths is well on its way to achieving its goals. In addition, the recruitment of sustainability professionals, such as Director of Responsible Business Ben Churchill and Sustainability Manager Maggie Stewart, has strengthened its efforts. Significant achievements so far include an 8% reduction in overall emissions and a 15% decrease in office energy consumption since 2024.
The Net Zero Transition Plan details how Freeths intends to accelerate its sustainability initiatives through several key strategies. These include integrating clear, science-aligned targets into decision-making processes while defining decarbonisation pathways across energy, travel, waste, and the supply chain. Governance and delivery will be bolstered by the Partnership Board, Executive Board, and various action groups dedicated to sustainability and climate issues. The firm is also committed to promoting nature-positive actions alongside its carbon reduction goals.
Freeths’ Chief Operating Officer Mark Blakemore acknowledged the importance of this journey, stating that “Our net zero journey is about focusing on what matters most and where we can make the biggest difference.” Meanwhile, Sustainability Manager Maggie Stewart highlighted the collaborative aspect of this effort, commenting that “Achieving net zero will require collaboration across our people, our suppliers and our wider networks.”
As Freeths rolls out its plan, stakeholders can anticipate updates to key policies including procurement and travel, ongoing investments in energy efficiency, and transparency through regular emissions reporting. The plan is an integral part of Freeths’ broader Sustainability Strategy, which prioritises net zero progress, promoting efficient operations, cultivating a sustainable culture, and working collaboratively for positive impact.
In addition to its sustainability goals, Freeths has renewed its partnership with The Tree Council, furthering its commitment to tree planting, nature recovery, and volunteer initiatives across the UK.
