Attorney General from 2007 to 2010, Baroness Scotland was the first woman to hold the post and before that was the youngest ever female QC, at 35. She is currently shadow Attorney General.
She became embroiled in a row over the immigration status of her Tongan cleaner, Loloahi Tapui, in 2009 and was fined £5,000 for failing to take copies of documents proving that the cleaner had the right to work here. Tapui was jailed for eight months for fraud in May last year.
Speaking on her return to the Bar, Baroness Scotland said: 'I'm delighted at the prospect of returning to the Bar, and tackling issues of human rights, equality and the rule of law and continuing to espouse the causes and issues which have engaged me throughout my 11 years as a government minister.
'Family breakdown is the cause of much suffering and I'm therefore honoured to be joining a set which is known for its excellence and rooted in this area of law.
'I will continue to champion domestic and international pro bono and maintain efforts to overcome the global challenges of domestic violence.'
Jonathan Cohen QC, head of chambers, described Baroness Scotland as 'one of the world's top barristers'.
