Office of National Statistics data has revealed divorce rates dropped by 4.5 per cent in 2020. Caroline Burstein of Thackray Williams said the statistics “don’t tell the whole story”. She added that the first lockdown “saw marriages frozen in time, with couples struggling to get to grips with what the future might hold, rather than contacting divorce lawyers. It was only after… lockdown ended that people started to take the first steps towards divorce”. Burstein said the real impact of lockdown won’t be seen until the next year’s statistics.
