Nicole Henham reflects on the introduction of the new Children and Families Act 2014 and the effect it will have on special needs education

With the coming into force of the
Children and Families Act 2014
as of 1 September 2014, it is
important to get to grips with the true
extent of the changes in the framework surrounding special educational needs.

At grass roots level, it is also necessary to determine the application of the transitional arrangements. It will be interesting to see
whether the new system will be properly understood by parents and how effectively relevant information has been disseminated.

Something that has remained unchanged is
the definition of special educational needs (SEN).
A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for
