Jane Klauber explains why charities are different from other employers

It is easy to assume that employment relationships within the charitable sector are really not that different from those in the public or private sector. In fact there are a whole range of factors that distinguish them from other sectors. Staff and others may say that the real difference is that charity staff tend to be more committed and work for less money. The truth is more complicated. While it is generally true that middle and senior managers in charities tend to be slightly lower paid than contemporaries in the private sector, more junior staff are often better paid. Even for middle range staff, a detailed analysis of benefits and flexibilities that charities often allow their staff may reveal that differentials are small or non-existent in terms of a total benefits package.
