Part III of the Disability Discrimination Act
1995 comes fully into force in October 2004.

For several years now, builders have been busy across the country installing ramps, widening doors, and generally making life easier for disabled people. The reason for all this activity may in a few cases have been a sudden upsurge in benevolent feelings towards the less fortunate; but it has more generally been the result of gradual coming into force of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Much of the Act – including the duty on the part of employers not to discriminate against disabled people – came into force in December 1996. In particular, employers of more than 20 employees have been since then under a duty (by virtue of Part II of the Act) to take all reasonable steps to ensure that the physical features of the premises they occupy do not lead to disabled employees (and prospective employees) being at a substantial disadvantage by comparison to others.
