Shearman & Sterling appoints managing partners

John Madden and Georg Thoma are to become global co-managing partners of Shearman & Sterling LLP.

Senior partner David Heleniak said: “Our firm was one of the early leaders in the international arena, and John and Georg’s appointment will help us maintain a global perspective in our management structure.”

Both Thoma and Madden will remain members of the executive group, along with senior partner David Heleniak. Heleniak will continue to focus primarily on firm-policy matters, strategic initiatives, client relationships and transactional work. Thoma and Madden will be responsible for implementation of the firm’s business strategy, as well as other activities inherent in the role of managing partner.

“Our international offices are central to our strategic business plan and Georg’s appointment will guarantee that the firm’s management continues to reflect its worldwide structure,” said Heleniak. “New York is the firm’s largest office and its historic centre, so it is important for John to play a global leadership role in the management of the firm.”

Thoma established Shearman & Sterling’s German operation in 1991 when he joined the firm and will continue to hold the post of managing partner of the firm’s German offices. He served as European managing partner from 1994-2000.

Madden was appointed managing partner of Shearman & Sterling’s New York office in the spring of 2004. He preceded Thoma as managing partner of the firm’s European offices serving from 1991-1995. Madden also served as co-head of the firm’s M&A group from 1987-1991 and head of the group from 1995-2001.
