Bird & Bird is launching a Dutch-based practice with a
lawyer from Houthoff Buruma. The practice will specialise in intellectual
property, litigation, telecoms and corporate. The firm is also hiring Harry Rek
from Houthoff's Amsterdam office. Bird & Bird already has offices in Paris,
Brussels and Stockholm.

Travers Smith Braithwaite is to have a presence in Berlin for
the first time, following the recruitment of Coudert Brothers corporate partner
Karl Pilny. He will head the firm's first local office in continental Europe,
which will focus on M&A, private equity, competition and litigation.

Thomas Cooper & Stibbard has opened an office in
Vancouver to expand its shipping network. Shipping lawyer Mark Sachs will head
the office and will be the only partner based there, although the 19-partner
firm hopes to expand the office in the future.

Clyde & Co has opened an office in Belgrade in the first
leg of its planned expansion into the former Yugoslavia and its surrounding
countries. The five-person office was formally launched at the end of October
and will be run jointly by two local partners, Radoje Stefanovic and Miodrag
Trajkovic. They also plan to use a network of local lawyers to meet clients'
needs.

US firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has launched an EU
competition practice in London for US clients increasingly entangled within the
European Commission's (EC) regulatory procedures. The practice will be headed by
David Vann, a partner in Simpson Thacher's New York antitrust practice. Vann and
the firm's most senior Europe-facing antitrust practitioner Kenneth Logan have
been handling EU regulatory work for US clients for some time. The move follows
client demand for the firm to provide a real-time service.
