With plans to aggressively grow the office and have it serve as a regional hub for the firm’s expanding activities in the south-east US, DLA Piper has also signed a 46,000-square-foot lease at One Atlantic Center, to accommodate 50 lawyers, with the option for additional space on two adjacent floors.

The four partners establishing DLA Piper’s Atlanta office are Mark Grantham, who will serve as the office managing partner, Russell Bogue and Arthur Brannan, all of whom join the firm from Hunton & Williams. In addition, Tracy Plott joins the firm from Jones Day.

Sixteen months after the merger between law firms Piper Rudnick, Gray Cary Ware and Freidenrich, and DLA, the combined global firm has continued to develop a client base in the south east consisting of Fortune-500 firms.

According to Francis B. Burch, Jr., joint chief executive officer of DLA Piper, the Atlanta office, in conjunction with the firm’s Raleigh and Tampa offices, will serve as a regional gateway in the south-east US for serving a growing number of clients in a five-state area including Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas and Florida.

“Entering the Atlanta market has long been a strategic goal of our firm,” said Burch. “This initial group, led by Mark Grantham, provides an excellent base for our continued growth in the market.

Atlanta is one of the last major financial centres in the country where we have not had an office, and building a quality presence there is consistent with our strategy to serve institutional clients in major economic markets in a meaningful way. With a growing base of active clients in the south-east, we expect to direct a considerable amount of business to the office moving forward.”
